#6 – Almond Milk
Why you should try it: Even though this dairy free milk doesn’t provide nearly as much protein or calcium as milk, it has become a good alternative for vegans and also for those sensitive to regular milk. It beats the cow cream in calories, containing less than half the amount in a glass of whole milk (approximately 60 calories), plus almond milk is low in sodium and is cholesterol and saturated fat free. Almond milk provides 25% of the recommended daily dose of vitamin D and 50% of E, which help keep our skin healthy and protects us against sun damage. The fact that it can be kept at room temperature, makes it easy to take anywhere.
It tastes like… A hint of nuttiness combined with that sweetness you find at the end of your bowl of nut cereal. In addition, maybe because of its slightly different consistency, it feels a bit warmer in your mouth (even after being in the fridge for days) than cow milk. With more body than skim milk, but a richer flavor, might be good to have around if enjoy making milkshakes or smoothies that will now have that natural sweetness but contain a lot less calories.
Beware: Aside from people with tree nut allergies, who should definitely stay away from almond milk, despite all its benefits and delicious flavor, if you suffer from chronic migraines or have thyroid conditions, consult with your physician before making the switch. Almond milk is rich in Tyrosine that could negatively affect both syndromes.
