#9 – John Travolta
When you think John Travolta and Oscars, your memory is automatically transported to last year’s ceremony when Travolta got creepy-touchy with Idina Menzel and Scarlett Johansson. Yeah, that wasn’t his best performance! But moving on from all that awkwardness, John is indeed a complete show man. He can act, sing and dance, which is not precisely common in his generation of movie stars. The man is something else… He hasn’t always chosen roles that fit him and that were easy to interpret. John goes for everything: loan shark, villain, heartthrob, dance teacher… I mean, everything! Who is that risky in Hollywood anymore? Does his desire to be considered versatile justify gambling with his career in a constant leap of faith? The result has been 50-50 brilliant and disastrous, as expected! Face Off was one of the best action films in the 90s, and in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction we got to see the best Travolta of all times, playing a part that had nothing to do with the charm of Danny Zuko in Grease, but everything to do with his effortless talent on the dance floor in both films. Does the audience have yet to see John Travolta betting on an Oscar winning role, or will his spark beginning to fade?
#8 – Johnny Depp
This three time nominee reportedly admitted that, while he is proud of his nominations, he is not crazy about getting a golden statue. The actor, who has had negative experiences with speeches lately—believe it or not, this 52 year old experienced actor, still gets tongue tied!—after all the criticism received for his address at the Hollywood Film Awards, is much more concerned with the less glamorous parts of his job: the technicalities of a good performance are his true passion. The already box office winner Black Mass has given Johnny the chance to masterly play the real-life gangster James “Whitey” Bulger. We are keeping our fingers crossed for Johnny, whether he wants the Oscar or not!
