The Oscars are the highest recognition of achievement in the motion picture and performance industry. Of course, we know that if everyone had one, the Oscars wouldn’t be the fiercely desired and prestigious awards they are. But seriously, there are cases that worry us—impeccable performances that have been ignored by the Academy, leaving these guys without their perfectly well deserved golden man! The list of Oscarless actors is surprising, and looking at their names we wonder… are they too cool for an Oscar? They sure want it and worked hard to be worthy of it, but, will they ever get it?
There was a big fuss over the Oscars this year (#OSW), but since we believe you don’t get an Oscar for the color of your skin, let’s stick to what really concerns us: will we be able to cross out Leo or Sylvester from this list? Update: The answer is YES!
Now, without further ado, let’s go for it! And the Oscar DOESN’T go to…
#13 – Leonardo DiCaprio
Update: 5-1 is his score! Congrats Leo on [finally getting] your big win!
4-0 is his score right now! And at this point we have come up with our very own conspiracy theory: What if the Academy just wants to push his buttons to see what more is he capable of? What if they are thinking: “if we don’t give him an Oscar this year either, what will he surprise us with next?” The media is certainly putting tons of pressure on him, as well as on the Academy, but we don’t know if all this noise reflects in any way his frustrations and concerns. Maybe a smart and talented guy like Leo is just competing against himself. His career is full of evidences: Leo has worked with all the major studios and directors, playing exceptional roles in very important and successful movies like Gangs of New York, Titanic, Romeo + Juliet, Wolf of Wall Street, The Aviator, Catch Me If You Can… the list goes on. If the tough contenders he’s been nominated with are to blame, or if he just needs to play one of those dramatic roles where the actor loses ridiculous amounts of weight or transforms himself—like he just did in this year’s The Revenant—plenty of conjectures out there, but what everyone seems to be certain of is that Leo’s time will not come, Leo’s time is now! Fingers crossed!
#12 – Sylvester Stallone
Update: Sorry Mr. Stallone, maybe next time?
His role in Creed this year, where once again he gets to become Rocky Balboa, in the 7th movie of the Rocky franchise, is the perfect opportunity for the Academy to give a well deserved award to the 69 year old acting legend Sylvester Stallone. Years and years of training and fake fighting have come down to this last version of Rocky Balboa, who portrays himself a bit like Syl in real life: tired, older, lonelier and possibly wiser, gracefully allowing the next generation to take the stand. This role is full of symbols and certainly has some sort of historical meaning for anyone who has watched his movies and followed Stallone’s career: an old veteran (no offense Buddy) who should have been recognized earlier, but like many others in this list, hasn’t.
